6 Quick Wins for Wardrobe Decluttering

Ready for a little wardrobe TLC? Decluttering isn’t just about clearing space; it can feel surprisingly fresh, freeing, and joyful. In fact, tidying up your wardrobe gives your mind a mini-makeover too! Research shows that reducing clutter can significantly lower stress and help you feel calmer, happier, and more focused.

Fun fact: The Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers (APDO) has found that a tidy space can improve sleep, boost self-esteem, and make everyday life feel lighter.

Quick wins you can do today

Start small

Don’t pull everything out at once. Begin with one rail or one drawer—it feels less overwhelming and you’ll see progress straight away.

Use the “one-year rule”

If you haven’t worn it in the last year, it’s a good sign it can move on (special items and seasonal exceptions allowed).

Ask the comfort & joy question

Does it fit well and make you feel good? Do you have places to wear it? If not, let it go—your wardrobe should only hold clothes that work for you now.

Create a “maybe” box

If you’re unsure, set those items aside in a box with today’s date. If you don’t reach for them in the next six months, you’ll know it’s time to donate.

Have donation bags ready

Keep bags or boxes by your side as you sort—one for donate, one for recycle, one for keep. Clothes can often be rehomed easily through charities like Weldmar Hospice or local shops.

Celebrate space gained

Enjoy the lighter feel of your wardrobe once you’ve finished a section. Many clients find this process surprisingly cathartic.

Need a little more help?

I’ve helped many clients make wardrobe edits that end up being pretty empowering (and yes—even fun!). Whether it’s rediscovering loved pieces or making space for what truly fits you and our way of life now, decluttering and/or organising is a gift to yourself.
